Life Before RoboForm

The other day I remarked to a friend that a blog password I was working on was a bit much to remember. It was obviously one of the automatically generated WordPress logins and for some reason I didn’t have it set up in my cut/paste spreadsheet for my growing list of passwords.

The response I received to my complaint? “You don’t have RoboForm?! Get it today!”

So here I am sitting at my desk thinking about how terrified I am of things that claim to save your passwords. What if it gets hacked? What if I forget a password and the program I’m using stops working? What if - what if - what if?

This morning, though, I found myself staring (again) at my growing list of passwords. A quick visit to Roboform revealed a little download that looked easy to use. RoboForm will save your login ID and password to any website and also has a feature that allows you to pre-fill information to complete online forms.

Even better? RoboForm was on SALE! (Actually, the website says the sale was supposed to end 11/30, but I still got the discount today).

So what happens? I downloaded RoboForm and went through the install process. When you visit a website that has a password you will type in your information as usual. When you hit the “Login” button the RoboForm “AutoSave Login” box will appear. You’ll have the opportunity to “name” the login for your list, create folders, and organize your growing lists.

Logging in after that is simple. You don’t even have to visit the login site first. Simply go up to your toolbar, click the RoboForm login link, and find the site you need on the list. You’ll automatically be redirected to the login page, which will automatically fill in and - gasp - log you into the site in question.

How on earth did I live without this tool before? I have no idea, but as my list of blogs and projects grows I’ll be ever thankful for my new best friend!

John Chow is Giving Away $6,000

Life has been busy, but the freelance writing business is off to a great start and I’ll be back to regular blogging very soon. In the meantime, I’ve found another incredible contest that I couldn’t wait to share.

John Chow is holding a new contest to give away $6,000 in CASH! $5,000 would go to the charity of your choice and $1,000 will go to you to spend however you want. If I win, I would give the $5K to the American Cancer Society and I would put the $1,000 into the struggling wedding fund! Wouldn’t that be a great way to start out the new year?

The contest is being sponsored by XR.com. XR.com is a tiny url service that gives web users a way to shorten their URL links when posting them on services like Twitter, Facebook, etc - anywhere where a URL that runs a mile long would be both cumbersome and difficult to look at. The service is completely free and is incredibly easy to use. All you have to do is enter the URL of the page you wish to shorten and you’ll be given a simple “redirect” URL. When the URL you post is clicked, it will direct users back to your web page without a hitch. Sign up for an account and check it out! It’s free - and you have nothing to lose!

Countdown to NaNoWriMo 2008

It’s hard to believe that October is drawing to an end already. I eagerly anticipate this coming Saturday morning, though - when all sanity will be tossed out the window in favor of a feverish writing frenzy in the race to hit 50,000 words by the end of November. National Novel Writing Month 2008 will officially begin!

Think you can do it? I don’t know if I can, but I’m willing to give it another go. Feel free to join me - if you dare!

Simply visit www.nanowrimo.org for information on how to sign up. I recommend searching for your regional group so that you can attend a few events. You’ll have the chance to get out of the house and write with others - you’ll still be writing, but at least you won’t feel like such a recluse.

In preparation, I’m adding my 2008 NaNoWriMo widgets to my blog this week. You’ll get to track the number of words I’ve written and hold me accountable for my actions and words (hahah!)!

Hope to see some of you in the wonderful land of NaNoWriMo this year. Good luck to those of you who do join us!
